Labasa has become the first town in Fiji to install 32 CCTV cameras to support law enforcement efforts, with footage now being monitored around the clock by the Labasa Police Command Centre.

The major milestone was revealed to fijivillage News by Satish Kumar, Chairperson of the Pinto Duavata Northern Crime Prevention Carnival, which is currently underway in Labasa.

Kumar says the Northern Division is spearheading several crime prevention initiatives this year, including the introduction of a mobile police post—a first-of-its-kind strategy in Fiji.

The mobile post, housed in a donated caravan, will travel to remote communities, ensuring a consistent police presence and improved security for villages often left out of routine patrols.

Kumar says plans are in place to provide more caravans to the Fiji Police Force.

The Duavata Carnival, which began last Saturday and runs through to this Saturday, aims to confront the escalating drug epidemic facing the nation.

Kumar says this year’s carnival is not just about entertainment—it’s about education and empowerment.

He says the theme focuses on raising awareness and taking action against drug-related issues devastating our communities.

Over the eight-night event, 21 contestants—including Kings, Queens, Princes and Princesses—will take the stage to speak out against drug abuse, using their platform to inspire change among youth.

In addition, the carnival will host a community symposium involving schools and villages to spread awareness on the dangers of drugs.

Organisers are aiming to surpass previous fundraising goals to support ongoing and future crime prevention projects in the North.

Kumar is hopeful that with increased public support and sponsorship, the carnival can continue its mission of building a safer, drug-free Fiji.
