Labasa Sugar Mill crushing season extended to next Friday

Labasa Sugar Mill crushing season extended to next Friday

The crushing season for the Labasa Sugar Mill has been extended to next Friday due to recent heavy rainfall and the resulting disruptions to harvesting and transportation.

Fiji Sugar Corporation Chairman, Nitya Reddy says that post-fire reinstatement trials at the Rarawai Mill are progressing well, and FSC remains hopeful of commencing crushing by early December, provided there are no unforeseen technical or mechanical issues.

Reddy is encouraging growers supplying cane to the mill to make full use of the extension.

He says the FSC field team will closely monitor harvesting activities and cane deliveries throughout this period.

He adds that weather conditions will also be reviewed daily, with adjustments to the deadline made if necessary.

FSC has assured all farmers, harvesting gangs, and transport operators that it will continue to provide full cooperation and support to ensure that all harvestable cane is cut and delivered within the extended timeframe.

Reddy is urging stakeholders supplying cane to the Viti Levu mills, from Rakiraki to Sigatoka, to remain calm as preparations continue.

He is also appealing to all growers to minimise cane burning and maintain steady field operations.

The Corporation says it stands ready to provide all necessary assistance, but emphasises that the primary drive must come from farmers as everyone works together towards a successful crushing season.

They say that further announcements regarding the Lautoka and Rarawai mills will be made next week.
