Epeli Laqeni, who is accused of murdering his defacto partner in Nakasi between September 3rd and 5th will appear in court again on the 19th of this month.
The state counsel also requested more time to file their disclosures, informing the court that while the post-mortem has been completed, the results have not yet been received.
They also submitted in court that it is highly likely Laqeni attempted to injure himself and was not harmed by the deceased.
Laqeni’s defence counsel told the court that he had arranged to meet with the medical officer at the Fiji Corrections Service but has not yet been able to do so.
He adds that Laqeni remains unable to stand and is currently being held in a room with six other inmates.
Judge Waleen George stressed the importance of medical assessments for all individuals in custody and recommended that Laqeni’s injuries be examined, noting that it has been two months since he lost the ability to stand.
She directed that a medical report be submitted to the court at the next hearing and transferred the case to Justice Daniel Goundar.
The case will be called again on November 19th.
