Prominent lawyer, Ana Tuiketei has stressed that journalists world wide are facing restrictions about asking questions to the people in power but journalists need to be empowered to continue to ask those questions.
She highlighted this while responding to questions by fijivillage about journalists not being allowed to ask questions during some press conferences and statements.
While responding to questions after comments made by Acting Prime Minister, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum in parliament about media organizations needing to declare their political proclivity, Tuiketei says if there are issues then there are procedures in place for raising these concerns or making complaints under the Media Industry Development Act.
The lawyer who was elected on the Defence Committee of the International Criminal Court's Bar Association in 2020 adds the Media Industry Development Act and international principles should be a journalists guidelines.
