India celebrates its 79th year of independence today.

After a long, drawn-out struggle on the 15th of August 1947, India finally managed to free itself from British rule, and the day serves as a reminder of the struggle for independence and the many lives that were sacrificed in pursuit of it.

India’s President, Droupadi Murmu has highlighted the collective progress of the nation and the opportunities ahead.

She reminded Indians of the sacrifices that paved the way for India's freedom and called upon every citizen to contribute towards nation-building.

The President has approved 127 gallantry medals and 40 distinguished service awards, including for those who participated in Operation Sindoor.

Meanwhile, thousands of people will be gathering at the Wagah Border to take part in the celebration.
