India and Fiji share a rich history bound by a multi-cultural heritage that has been strengthened further with a declaration of Girmit Day as a national holiday.

The Acting Chief of Protocol, Rosa Dalituicama, highlighted this at the reception of India’s 77th Independence Day last night at the Grand Pacific Hotel.

Dalituicama says India and all Indians celebrate it as a new beginning.

She adds India is the world’s largest and most vibrant democracy and the third-largest technological and scientific industry.

Meanwhile, the Indian High Commissioner P.S Karthigeyan says they take great pride in its role as a trusted partner of Fiji.

Karthigeyan also emphasised close and multifaceted bilateral relations with Fiji built on mutual respect, cooperation and strong people-to-people ties.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, cabinet ministers and members of the diplomatic corps were also present at the celebrations.
