Illegal fishing continues to be a challenge in Bureta Ovalau - Ratu mai Bureta
Ratu mai Bureta Jone Davila and Director Operations of the iTaukei Affairs Board, Mosese Nakoroi

Ratu mai Bureta Jone Davila has raised a concern during the Lomaiviti Provincial Council Meeting that illegal fishing continues to be a challenge in the tikina of Bureta.

He is seeking advice from the government on what the villagers can do if they catch people illegally fishing within their traditional fishing ground while there is a “tabu.”

He says the purpose of them practicing the “tabu” is to improve the livelihood of their people.

While responding to his concerns, Director Operations of the iTaukei Affairs Board, Mosese Nakoroi says the Fish Warden Association in each village has the right to seize any boat that is found breaching the ban.

Nakoroi says the wardens need to liaise with the Ministry of Fisheries once they have seized the boats and fish.
