Hundreds of Hindus gathered at the Sri Raj Maha Mariamman Temple in Suva last night to celebrate Maha Shivratri and witness renowned international artist Sumeet Tappoo live in concert.

It was also the first time Hindus celebrated Shivratri without any curfew restrictions since 2019.

Maha Shivaratri is a festival which is celebrated annually in honour of the Lord Shiva.

It marks a remembrance of overcoming darkness and ignorance in life and the world and is observed by chanting prayers, fasting, and meditating on ethics and virtues such as honesty, non-injury to others, charity and forgiveness.

Tappoo says the purpose of last night's event was to pray for the rest of the world who are suffering, especially due to the war in Ukraine and the floods in Australia.

He has also revealed that the Sai Sanjeevani Children's Heart Hospital which will provide free surgeries to children with heart disease will be ready by next month.

Tappoo says there are hundreds of children in Fiji who are in need of surgery which is not spoken about but they know it is out there.

He says they have a massive waiting list and the surgeons coming from overseas will be saving the lives of so many children.

Tappoo adds they will be making a formal announcement soon.
