Hindus have started with their preparation for 'Maha Shivratri', which will be celebrated tomorrow.

Many have started cleaning and preparing offerings to mark one of the major celebrations in the Hindu calendar.

Maha Shivratri, which translates to "the great night of Lord Shiva," is a significant Hindu festival celebrated annually in honor of Lord Shiva, one of the principal deities in Hinduism.

Shree Sanatan Dharm Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji says according to Hindu mythology, Maha Shivratri marks the night when Lord Shiva performed the heavenly dance of creation, preservation and destruction.

They say it is also believed to be the night when Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati got married and therefore devotees observe this day as a celebration of marital bliss and divine union.

The Sabha says Hindus observe the celebration through fasting, prayers and devotional rituals.

They add that it is an occasion where communities gather socialise and share greetings.

Various branches of the Sabha will be having their Shivratri celebration along with International Women's Day today.
