Fiji Teachers Union General Secretary, Agni Deo Singh says they have been inundated with calls from teachers after the Permanent Secretary for Education, Dr. Anjeela Jokhan stated last week that a teacher with a degree receives $26,000 salary annually while assistant head teachers’ salaries increased from $21,000 to $32,000 annually.
Singh says graduates are being paid $22,500 and assistant head teachers are being paid $28,600 annually.
He is asking whether the anomalies will be addressed soonest and backdated to appointment dates.
Singh has also provided us with 15 graduates’ names who he says have contacted the FTU with their concerns.
Dr. Jokhan has said the Fijian government had increased salaries of teachers and post holders twice in the last 7 years. She says in 2017 following the job evaluation exercise, teachers had salary increases averaging 13 percent and 25 percent for teachers in leadership roles.
We have sent questions to Dr. Jokhan. She is yet to respond.
