Solicitor General Ropate Green Lomavatu has emphasized the need to remove barriers preventing women from full political participation, ensuring electoral reforms promote inclusivity, transparency and fairness.
While speaking at a roundtable discussion with civil society groups and electoral stakeholders held at Holiday Inn, Lomavatu reaffirmed the government’s commitment to gender-inclusive electoral processes.
Lomavatu says the challenges faced by women in politics, include difficulties in candidacy registration, limited campaign financing and exposure to gender-based electoral violence.
He also confirms that the government has approved a review of key election laws, with revised legislation expected in Parliament by April or May.
He adds to ensure broad participation, regional consultations will be held in Lautoka and Labasa, expanding discussions beyond Suva.
The Solicitor General says the reforms aim to enhance women’s access to political leadership, strengthen protections against gender-based political violence and incorporate international best practices.
Lomavatu also extended his sincere gratitude to the Fiji Council of Social Services (FCOSS) and the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) for organizing this important forum.
He called for decisive action to close gender gaps in leadership, aligning with Sustainable Development Goal 5.5.
