The Fijian Government has not given enough money for the Fiji Sports Council to maintain the grounds according to the requirements for international matches.
This was revealed by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka in response to questions on whether he had received a report from the Minister for Youth and Sports following the public outcry, including his own, over the condition of the HFC Bank Stadium pitch when the Fiji Water Flying Fijians hosted Scotland last Saturday.
Rabuka says the Government has been negligent on this matter.
Following Saturday’s historic match, Fiji’s first-ever home test as a tier-one rugby nation, Rabuka expressed his frustration over the poor condition of the pitch and demanded a full explanation from the Minister responsible.
He said while it was a proud day for Fiji, the match was marred by visible signs of damage on the field, including soft patches and uneven footing, which he says is simply not good enough.
Rabuka says Fiji must do better for the players, fans, and for the country’s international reputation.
We have sought comments from Fiji Sports Council Executive Chair, Ratu Gilbert Vakalalabure. He is yet to comment.
Meanwhile, the Flying Fijians will take on Tonga in their next home game at 3pm on August 30th at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva, in the opening round of the 2025 Pacific Nations Cup.
