From prison to the runway: Sachin Sharma to showcase first men’s collection at Makete Show

Former inmate Sachin Sharma is preparing to make a remarkable debut as a fashion designer at this Saturday’s Makete Fashion Show, where he will showcase his first-ever men’s attire collection.

Sharma, who discovered and honed his tailoring skills while running the prison’s tailor shop, says he has completely transformed his life and is now successfully operating a boutique at the Suva Flea Market.

Speaking to fijivillage News, Sharma shared that he has been in business for three months, fulfilling orders for church groups, schools, and local customers.

He says his services include colour waters, screen printing, and made-to-measure garments.

For the fashion show, Sharma says he will present his signature style — a screen-printed long-sleeve shirt with a Chinese collar, paired with a two-toned sulu vakataga.

He explained that while he first learned tailoring at Swann Textiles in 2005, it was during his time in prison that he received real training by completing a course through the Fiji National University, and experienced a personal transformation.

Since his release in April 2025, Sharma says he has invested in his own equipment and established his boutique at the Suva Flea Market, eager to make a mark in the fashion industry.

The Makete Fashion Show will be held at the Suva Flea Market at 6pm this Saturday.
