Frequent hand washing vital to combatting infections

Students along the Lami to Navua corridor have been reminded of the importance of maintaining hygiene by frequently washing their hands to prevent infections such as typhoid, diarrhoea, COVID-19, and other diseases.

The Head of Health Protection at the Ministry of Health and Medical Services, Dr Aalisha Sahukhan, says that children under the age of five are most likely to die from diarrhoea.

Dr Aalisha says it is vital for individuals and families within the community to keep their environment clean and practice proper hand hygiene regularly.

She adds by promoting hand hygiene, we are protecting ourselves and the most vulnerable members of our community.

Colgate-Palmolive Marketing Manager Jyotika Devi says that strengthening hand hygiene practices is one of the most cost-effective ways to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.

Devi says they are working closely with the Ministry of Education and UNICEF to support the government’s commitment to improving water, sanitation, and hygiene by providing soap.

The theme for this year’s Global Hand washing Day is “Why Are Clean Hands Still Important?
