One of France’s largest naval vessels, Dixmude is currently berthed at the Kings Wharf in Suva.
It is an amphibious assault ship with a landing helicopter deck.
The last time the Mission Jeanne D’Arc group did a circumnavigation was 21 years ago in 2001.
Commanding Officer of Dixmude, Captain Emmanuel Mocard says the vessel carries a crew of French sailors, 160 cadets, an amphibious flotilla, 2 helicopter detachments as well as a tactical group from the French Army.
Mocard also says the Jeanne D’Arc Mission is not only a training one, it allows France to strengthen its regional partnerships and also to contribute to maritime safety.
He further says they do all this while training future navy officers the art of operations to prepare them for the challenges they will have to face in the years to come.
They recently completed a 10 day training off the coast of New Caledonia which also included Fiji Navy Patrol Boat, RFNS Savenaca.
Captain Mocard adds training was for humanitarian assistance and disaster responses or emergency evacuation of citizens.
The 199 metre long ship will be in the country until Thursday.
