Former Supervisor of Elections, Mohammed Saneem, who is charged with one count of Receiving a Corrupt Benefit, has been granted bail by the Suva Magistrates Court today.
Magistrate Krishan Prasad has granted bail to Saneem on a $10,000 non-cash bond and 2 sureties.
He also has to surrender his passport to the court, he cannot interfere with the state witnesses and cannot change his permanent address.
However, his lawyer Devanesh Sharma requested that Saneem be allowed to travel within the country for work purposes as he owns a law firm in Labasa.
He has been allowed to travel around the country for work purposes.
Saneem's sureties are his elder brothers Mohammed Saleem and Mohammed Sareem.
It is alleged that between the 1st of June 2022 and the 31st of July 2022, while being employed as the Supervisor of Elections, Saneem without lawful authority and reasonable excuse, asked for, and obtained a benefit for himself, that is, the approval and payment of deductible tax relief of more than $50,000 on his back pay from a senior Government official.
The case has been adjourned to the 19th of March.
