Fiji's Green Energy leap to pioneering hydrogen for a sustainable future - Kamikamica

Fiji is taking a bold step toward a cleaner and more sustainable future with the Hydro Duel Fuel Generator Project, implemented at the Lautoka Depot in collaboration with Fiji Gas and a corporation in Japan.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Cooperatives Manoa Kamikamica highlighted this during the parliament sitting today and said that the innovative initiative was made possible through collaboration with the governments of New Zealand and Japan, which aims to reduce the nation's reliance on fossil fuels while exploring the potential of hydrogen as a sustainable energy source.

Kamikamica says the project, currently in its testing phase, is a milestone in Fiji’s journey toward green energy.

The transition reflects lessons from New Zealand’s successful adoption of similar green energy solutions in 2023.

He adds that hydrogen holds enormous potential as a game changer, beyond generating electricity, it can fuel vehicles and vessels, offering a practical path to reducing carbon emissions in the transportation and energy sectors.

The Deputy Prime Minister says this project is more than just a test, it’s a statement about Fiji’s future.

He says the Japanese government’s technical expertise and funding have been instrumental, while New Zealand’s example serves as an inspiration for what’s possible.

Kamikamica says as Fiji continues its green energy journey, initiatives like this will be crucial in building a sustainable tomorrow for future generations.

In response to the statement, Opposition MPs Faiyaz Koya and Naisa Tuinaceva both supported the project saying that it will be a major step for the country.
