The National Disaster Controller David Kolitagane is requesting Fijians to minimise or refrain from unnecessary travel to rural communities and villages in Vanua Levu that have been affected by Tropical Cyclone Yasa.
Kolitagane says this is adding to the strain on the limited water and sanitation services available to the people in these areas and also to the services they are restoring.
He says as it is, they are asking residents in affected areas to store water and food safely and practice good hygiene.
Kolitagane says they have asked the residents to also keep their surroundings clean to reduce the risk of an outbreak of leptospirosis, typhoid, dengue and diarrhea.
He says they support travel to town centres in Vanua Levu, only unnecessary travel to rural communities on the island are strongly discouraged.
