Fiji still on tsunami watch, people warned to stay out of the water

The Mineral Resources Department calling on people to stay out of the water, away from beaches, reefs and low lying coastal areas as a tsunami has been generated.

They say based on current modeling and international bulletins, wave heights are between 30 centimetres to a metre high and are expected for parts of Fiji’s coastline, particularly Suva.

The Mineral Resources Department says the first wave may not be the largest, but wave activity may continue for several hours.

They say as of 5pm today, there is a tsunami watch for Fiji due to a distant source event.

They also say there is no immediate threat to land, but marine and coastal activities are at risk.

Possible impacts will include strong ocean currents and dangerous wave surges in coastal and marine areas.
