The Fiji Taxi Association says while police checkpoints over the last few months have helped reduce the number of robberies against taxi drivers, there are still many desperate people out there who try to do the same everyday.

General Secretary Ashwin Lal says they are hurt that they recently lost one of their own in the alleged murder and robbery case in Nausori.

He says they know police resources are stretched because of the current situation so they will try to meet with Police to look at a way forward.

Lal says what they do know is that regular police presence and patrols are a huge difference.

He adds they are also telling drivers to look at warning signs when picking up people.

An 18-year-old student has been charged for the alleged murder of a 60-year taxi driver last month.

The taxi driver who resided in Korociriciri, Nausori was reported missing on the 26th of last month after he failed to return home after work.

Police say a day later the victim's vehicle was found abandoned along Qiolevu Road and his body was discovered a few metres away.

Investigators have also recovered items allegedly stolen from the victim.

The student has also been charged with one count of robbery and three counts of theft.
