The Fiji Corrections Service is hoping to expand its Labasa Correction Centre to solve the issue of overcrowding.
Fiji Correction Services Acting Commissioner Salote Panapasa says the focus area of their budget submission is their projects, which for instance is the expansion of the Labasa Correction Centre as the overcrowding rate is very high.
She says their Centre in Labasa caters accommodates all the categories of prisoners and they are also looking at building a separate institution for remand and women offenders in Labasa.
Panapasa also highlighted that next week they will be doing a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Supervisor's office, where it can accommodate a training room, an office for the psychologist and counselors.
The Acting Commissioner also says that they have requested for acting allowances for their officers which is something that was not incorporated in their budget in previous years.
The 2023/2024 national budget will be announced at 10am this Friday.
