It was an emotional day yesterday for Muslim inmates serving their time at the Fiji Corrections facility as the Fiji Corrections Service opened its doors to the families of these inmates, allowing them to celebrate their 30 days of fasting in observance of Eid al-Fitr, which was globally celebrated last week.
Eid is one of two major holidays celebrated by Muslims and commemorates the end of the holy month of Ramadan, in which Muslims fast daily from before dawn until sunset for 30 days.
A resident of Nakasi, Nazma Nisha, was grateful when the Fiji Corrections Service allowed the families of Muslim inmates to celebrate their 30 days of fasting in observance of Eid al-Fitr, which was celebrated globally last week
The 60-year-old mother says they were allowed to bring food and eat with her son who is currently serving his term in the Minimum Corrections Center.
She acknowledges that her son made a mistake for which they are paying, but she is thankful for the opportunity to connect with them during such important events.
