Fiji Correction Services urges public to help combat prison drug infiltration

The Fiji Correction Services pleads with all Fijians to help stop the infiltration of drugs in prison centres after methamphetamine was found behind prison walls, but they are trying to address the issue by strengthening their security checks, physical infrastructure and strip search.

Deputy Commissioner of Corrections Auta Moceisuva highlighted this after being questioned by fijivillage News on the plans they will take to solve the issues that were highlighted by the new Commissioner of Correction that was reported by Fiji Times yesterday.

Moceisuva says they also have a sniffer dog that will offer some help to detect drugs but with limited coverage area because they have only one sniffer dog that can be used on this operation.

He says the issue of drugs in prison has been an ongoing problem because the issues have been dealt with every day.

The report that was highlighted by the new Commissioner of Correction Dr Jalesi Nakarawa was that illegal drugs are passed to the inmates when they attend court hearings or while visiting hospitals.

Dr Nakarawa also claimed that FCS officers could also play a part in transporting the drugs into an inmate's cell and at times, it is thrown into the prison compound.

He also highlighted that Corrections officers should be in no contact with the inmates because of all the rules.
