Fiji Cancer Society registers 24 breast cancer patients this year and 733 patients from 2018 till date
Fiji Cancer Society President Makarava Wilson (3rd from R) says they require about $300,000 annually to take care of the patients.

24 breast cancer patients have registered with the Fiji Cancer Society so far this year while 733 patients have registered from 2018 till date.

This has been highlighted by the Society's President Makarava Wilson during the launch of Bushells Fiji's Biggest Morning Tea.

Wilson says breast cancer is still the leading cause of cancer in Fiji.

He says they have registered 58 cancer patients this year compared to 55 for the same period last year.

He adds they have visited 14 communities this year where they provided breast and cervical cancer screening to 324 women, prostate screening to 152 men and have gathered 14 abnormal results that they have referred to the hospital.

Wilson says they require about $300,000 annually to take care of the patients.

He says they raised more than $53,000 last year from 10 different organisations hosting morning tea events.

Meanwhile, Motibhai Group of Companies' Group Marketing and Business Development Manager, Abraham Gomes says the Bushells Fiji's Biggest Morning Tea which began in 2006 has helped thousands of lives and enabled patient care and support initiatives to be delivered on time for people to go through the experience of cancer.

He says the campaign that traditionally runs from June to December every year has been shortened to 2 months since last year due to the negative impacts of COVID-19.
