Fiji’s farmers are set to gain stronger protection against climate impacts following Cabinet’s endorsement of a collaboration agreement between the Ministry of Agriculture and the New Zealand Institute for Bioeconomy Science Limited.

The agreement is part of the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade-funded Climate-Smart Pacific Food Systems programme — a $15.3 million NZD regional initiative aimed at boosting the resilience of farmers in Fiji, Tonga, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, and the Solomon Islands.

Under the partnership, Plant and Food Research will subcontract elements of the programme to Fiji’s Ministry of Agriculture.

A total of NZD $338,352 has been allocated to the Ministry to support the implementation of climate-smart agricultural activities in Fiji as an official implementing partner.

The programme is expected to strengthen local farming systems, introduce more sustainable and adaptive technologies, and help communities better manage the increasing risks posed by climate change.
