A farmer in Sigatoka is urging market vendors to keep the vegetables reasonably priced as they sell their vegetables very cheap to the vendors and middlemen.
This comes as people have been raising concerns that prices of vegetables and root crops have gone up recently and are adding to the issue of inflation.
Nabitu farmer Abhay Sharma says bhindi or okra is 50 cents to $1 per kilogram, chilli is about $5 per kilogram but off-season vegetables such as eggplants will be priced higher.
Sharma says farmers sell the vegetables cheaply to middlemen and vendors but the vendors increase the prices.
He is urging vendors to charge reasonable prices and is also requesting people to be more understanding if prices are high because vegetables that are in short supply will be priced higher. The farmer further says the recent rainy condition has been good for farmers and they are grateful that it has not caused any major flooding.
He says this is the off-season for most farmers in Sigatoka so the rainy weather has been manageable.
