Families urged to spend more time together this Christmas – Archbishop

Families need to spend more time with their loved ones this Christmas, to nurture love and ensure their children feel valued and supported.

This was highlighted by Archbishop Peter Loy Chong during the Christmas celebrations at the Sacred Heart Cathedral organised by the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre and the High Commission of India.

Chong says husbands and wives should dedicate time to each other, strengthening their relationship, so that their love naturally extends to their children.

He says in this way children will not feel neglected.

The Archbishop says they have rituals where they travel around Fiji and talk to youths and parents to understand how they can respond to their problems.

He says this year, discussions focused on understanding why young people turn to drugs.

Chong says the most common answers were peer pressure, experimenting, coping with stress and discovering themselves.

He says these answers are related to adolescence stage of life where they want to discover themselves.

The Archbishop says they have spoken to people from Labasa, Savusavu, Bua and Ba.

Meanwhile, more than 100 people gathered for the celebrations.

Children and adults also sang Christmas carols in English and Hindi and recited poems, spreading joy of the season.
