The Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre has recorded shocking statistics as they received 1,732 new cases from January to October this year.
This is an increase when compared to the statistics from January to December last year.
The statistics are for domestic violence, rape, attempted rape, other sexual offences child rape, child sexual abuse, child physical/verbal/emotional abuse, adult survivor, sexual harassment and others.
Domestic violence had a shocking 1,113 cases.
Coordinator Shamima Ali says crimes against women, children and girls are very under reported.
Ali says we may be just seeing about 10 percent of the story.
She adds seven women have lost their lives in the last 11 months as a result of alleged domestic violence or murder.
Ali says during the COVID-19 pandemic, they received reports of men being victims as well.
