The Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre has seen a total of 661 rape survivors over the past 5 years, and of this, 185 are child rape survivors who were 2 to 17 years of age.
This was highlighted by the Coordinator Shamima Ali at the candlelight vigil last night to give visibility to the issue of rape and mark International Women’s Day.
Ali says of the 661 rape cases, there were 701 perpetrators which means that there were gang rape cases.
She says 524 perpetrators were related to the survivors.
Ali says there were 380 marital rape survivors seen by the Centre who were from the ages of 18 to 66.
Ali says most of us have ignored the issue of rape and that is why they have come up with a anti rape campaign.
She says in some cases homes have become the most dangerous place for women and children.
