Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre is calling for regional and international solidarity for the women of West Papua who are suffering and those who have died as a result of state violence perpetrated on them by the Indonesian Defence Force and demand for the country’s freedom from Indonesia.
This is part of the Centre’s International Women’s Day celebrations.
Coordinator, Shamima Ali says we must continue to make a stand against violence inflicted on the people of West Papua.
Ali says as pacific islanders, we should not be quiet about this issue.
Ali says in times of crisis, women and children are the ones most affect and Indonesia has now imposed martial law using COVID-19 as a cover to conduct military operations.
She says a survey conducted between 2013 and 2017 by the Papua Women’s Working Group together with the Asian Justice found that 4 out of 10 West Papua women have been subjected to state violence.
