FRIEND is making a lot of political mileage for its work – AG
Minister for Economy, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, FLP Leader Mahendra Chaudhry and SODELPA Leader Viliame Gavoka.

Minister for Economy, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says non governmental organisation, Foundation for Rural Integrated Enterprises Development or FRIEND is making a lot of political mileage for its work and is the only organisation that the opposition keeps talking about.

He says there are several other faith based organisations and NGOs that are doing their work quietly and do not go out and seek public attention and also do not get in touch with politicians.

Sayed-Khaiyum made these comments after SODELPA Leader Viliame Gavoka said in parliament that it appears when it comes to distribution of food, the network established by the NGOs is effective.

Gavoka then asked whether government is working in close liaison with the NGOs to ensure the distribution is more effective.

Sayed-Khaiyum says there are many members of NGOs and civil society organisations that have given food ration packs to members of the public who they think needed it as they have not been working in areas like Nadi and Lautoka.

We are currently trying to get comments from FRIEND Director, Sashi Kiran.

Following comments made in parliament, Fiji Labour Party Leader, Mahendra Chaudhry says Sayed Khaiyum’s attack on FRIEND, well known for its charitable works, is not only unwarranted but disgusting and shameful.

Chaudhry says FRIEND is not a political organisation and its work in promoting the welfare of the rural communities and assisting the needy, is much appreciated and admired by the people.

He says there are thousands out there who are grateful for the help they have received from FRIEND when the government failed to reach them.

Chaudhry says instead of being critical, Sayed-Khaiyum should have had the sense to acknowledge and thank FRIEND for their good work.
