As concerns continue to be raised about increasing prices, the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission has confirmed that they are working on some immediate counter inflation measures which include price reviews of items that they determine need addressing for potential price control.
Following questions posed by fijivillage News, the FCCC has revealed that they have called for submissions from all relevant stakeholders.
The FCCC says these calls for submissions have been widely disseminated on their social media platforms, as well as through physical materials like flyers. It says the most relevant price control action being taken is the review of the status of price control and essential items, which covers the removal of certain items from the price control list and addition of items to the price control list like hygiene products, as per the assessment based on the data gathered from market surveys and public consultations and submissions.
Since the last review of the listed food price control order was carried out in September 2021 with crucial policy recommendations, FCCC called for this review.
The commission says other Price Control Order reviews in process are basic food items, stationery, motor vehicle parts and accessories, agriculture and rent freeze order.
Some of the goals for this is to assist those in the agricultural industry, boost food security and help reduce production costs for locally produced products. After the reviews, there may be further consultations if it is determined that more data is needed or there has been insufficient feedback.
