Three years after captaining New Zealand in cricket, Kaylum Boshier is set for his Chiefs debut against the Crusaders in Super Rugby Aotearoa tonight.

The 21-year-old from Taranaki is the younger brother of Chiefs loose forward Lachlan Boshier, who is absent for the Christchurch fixture because of a foot injury, and plays the same position.

Boshier skippered New Zealand’s under-19s at the Cricket World Cup on home soil at the start of 2018 and was an all-rounder on the radar of Central Districts and New Zealand Cricket.

Six months later, the former New Plymouth Boys' High School student was leaning towards rugby, scoring a try for Taranaki in their Ranfurly Shield defence against Poverty Bay in Tikorangi.

Boshier, who has been named on the bench against the Crusaders after missing the opening defeat to the Highlanders last Friday, says he wasn’t fully committed to rugby until 2019.

He said the Chiefs was always his destination because of his brother, Lachlan, and he spent a full pre-season with them and had to move away from playing cricket in the Taranaki club leagues this summer.

The Chiefs will face the Crusaders at 6.05 tonight.

In the Super Rugby Australia, the Brumbies will take on the Reds at 8.45 tonight. Last night, the Rebels edged the Force 10-7.
