Gale-force winds with peaks of more than 100kph have blown through large parts of south-east Queensland overnight, bringing down more trees across the region in the wake of ex-Cyclone Alfred.
Heavy rain that may lead to flash flooding is forecast to continue to develop across the south-east Queensland and northern NSW today, with six-hourly rainfall totals between 80 and 130 millimetres likely.
More than 320,000 people are without power and locally intense rainfall is possible, with potential 24-hourly totals between 300 and 400 millimetres as the system moves inland and weakens.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says the situation in Queensland and northern New South Wales remains very serious.
He says heavy rainfall, damaging wind gusts, and coast surf impacts are expected to continue over coming days.
He also mentioned the 61-year-old man who died in floodwaters near Dorrigo.
Emergency services were searching for the man, who was swept away after the 4x4 vehicle he was driving became caught in floodwaters.
He adds their thoughts are with his loved ones and the community at this heartbreaking time.
