Elon Musk has reinstated former US president Donald Trump's Twitter account after more than 15 million accounts responded to a poll.

Musk, who bought the social media site last month, asked users in a poll whether Trump should be reinstated and 51.8 per cent of the 15,085,458 responses voted yes.

Musk tweeted the people have spoken and Trump will be reinstated.

ABC News reports Trump had appeared less than keen earlier in the day.

When asked whether Trump planned to return to Twitter by a panel at the Republican Jewish Coalition's annual leadership meeting he said he does not see any reason for it.

Trump says he will stick with his new platform Truth Social, the app developed by his Media and Technology Group startup.

He adds Truth Social has better user engagement than Twitter and is doing "phenomenally well".
