An elderly woman of Tavuki Village in Kadavu, Timaima Qaranavua says she is relieved that her granddaughter will walk back home on a safe footbridge after school.

This comes after the commissioning of their footbridge by the Minister for Rural and Maritime Development, Inia Seruiratu.

Qaranavua says she was worried about her granddaughter’s safety for long but with the new footbridge, it will improve accessibility.

Her granddaughter joins more than 147 students that cross the river daily to get to school.

Seruiratu is currently on a 3-day tour in Kadavu where he will visit various ongoing projects and commission the opening of completed projects.

He says for many years the villagers had to walk on tree trunks when crossing the river beside their village and it was hard to keep up because the trees would be easily swept away by strong currents during natural disasters.

Seruiratu says children from the seven villagers in the district of Tavuki will use this footbridge to get to school.

Seruiratu says the new footbridge cost the government more than $27,000.
