Kadavu Provincial Council member and Tavuki District representative Alipate Nasama says those drug lords who are not doing the dirty job are the ones urging the unemployed youths and children who are living in the village to cultivate marijuana in Kadavu.

Nasama highlighted this while speaking at the Provincial Council consultation organised by the Higher Education Commission.

He says youths in Kadavu are cultivating marijuana, and this is what most of them occupy themselves with when they do not want to finish their studies and return to the village.

He also highlighted that a lot of youths are leaving the island through the government’s overseas employment scheme.

Nasama says he is thankful that the Higher Education Commission Fiji is bringing back vocational studies into secondary schools where most of these youths can up-skill themselves.

He adds these youths are good in technical and agriculture subjects so using vocational studies will ensure they move away from a life of crime.

The Kadavu Provincial Council member also highlighted that another challenge they are facing is the high consumption of grog and alcohol by youths.
