Attorney General Siromi Turaga stresses that they cannot invent new sentences based on a surge of a particular crime, and the death penalty cannot imposed on offenders as it is unconstitutional.
Turaga was responding to questions from fijivillage News in regards to some families of taxi drivers and the public calling for severe sentences and even bringing back the death penalty for those people who commit murder, such as the case of the taxi driver who was found dead in Qalitu and the brutal murder of a man in Samabula on Christmas Eve.
Turaga says it is really sad when these crimes take place, and it is not a good reflection of who we are in Fiji.
He says whatever sentence imposed will be made according to law.
The Attorney General says there is a lot of work to be done, and the Police are doing that, and the Minister for Home Affairs has gone on public record addressing the Police officers.
He adds the courts also issue harsh sentences in such cases.
