Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration Pio Tikoduadua says cremation will help with the situation of overcrowded burial spaces while speaking on the lack of burial spaces at the Nasinu Cemetery.
He says the cemetery is filling up quickly and the informal settlement behind the cemetery near Davuilevu Housing is taking up the spaces.
This was highlighted during the review of the ‘Consolidated Review Report of the Fiji Corrections Service Annual Report 2018–2019 and 2019–2020’ in parliament.
He says due to a lack of burial spaces, the committee suggests if some of the people can take their loved ones to the village and bury them.
Tikoduadua says cremation will help with the situation of burial spaces, however, iTaukei and Christians particularly do not advocate for cremations.
He says the Hindu community use cremation very well.
He says as Catholics, they are working around the idea of being cremated and not being buried.
