Commissioner of Fiji Corrections Service, Dr Jalesi Nakarawa has been sent to leave after the Ministry of Justice received reports of serious incidents and potential breaches within the Corrections under his leadership.
Minister for Justice, Siromi Turaga says these allegations raise significant concerns regarding the governance, security, conduct, management and administration of the Corrections Service and warrants immediate investigation.
Turaga says with the concurrence of the Prime Minister and the Chairman of the Constitutional Offices Commission he is invoking Section 22(1) of the Fiji Corrections Service Act 2006 to address this matter.
He says Dr Nakarawa is on leave so that a thorough and an independent investigation can take place.
He will remain on leave with full entitlements during this period.
In his absence, Deputy Commissioner of Corrections, Auta Moceisuva will serve as Acting Commissioner.
Turaga says the Ministry is committed to restoring faith, good governance, justice and transparency within the Corrections Service.
