Complaints lodged against supermarkets for not complying with wages regulation

40 supermarket branches are currently being investigated for non compliance of wages regulations which includes non payment of minimum wage rate, overtime, meal allowance and annual leave.

While speaking during the committee of supply, Minister for Economy, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says complaints have been lodged against these companies and investigations have started.

He says the number of cases are expected to increase with the implementation of revised national minimum wage rate.

He also reveals 10 data entry clerks are calculating wages arrears for backlog cases of 25 security companies.

Sayed-Khaiyum told the parliament that a new expenditure allocation of $201,845 has been made for the Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations to look into these cases.
