A steering Committee has been established by the Cabinet to help in developing a legal framework for the establishment of the Fiji Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

Committee Chairperson, Sashi Kiran says Fiji has emerged from a challenging political environment, shaped by a history of ethnic tensions, political instability, and coups.

Kiran says the government moved a motion in Parliament to establish a National Truth and Reconciliation Commission to address past grievances and promote national healing.

The Committee Chairperson further says they have been consulting various stakeholders to discuss provisions of the draft legal framework, where leaders from civil society, faith groups, political parties and media organisations attended the consultations and provided suggestions for the draft framework.

Kiran adds that they will continue to invite submissions from individuals and groups to help shape the legal draft.

Meanwhile, consultations will continue next week in Labasa, Nausori, Lautoka and Suva where the international transitional justice expert will be travelling with the team to these locations to help share lessons learnt from Truth Commissions around the world.

Public Consultations are as follows:

26th August 9am to 2pm - Kshatriya Hall, Naodamu, Labasa 27th August 9am to 12pm - Vunimono High School Hall, Nausori 28th August 9am to 12pm - Fiji Sugar Cane Growers Hall, Lautoka 29th August 9am to 2 pm - Suva Civic Centre – Lower auditorium
