The lives, culture and identity of Pacific people are under threat and urgent action is needed.
Speaking at the Asia Pacific Forum of National Human Rights Institutions co-hosted by the APF and the Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission, Acting President and Chief Justice, Salesi Temo emphasized the urgent need for collective action on the climate crisis, describing it as a present threat to the lives, culture, and identity of Pacific communities.
Chief Justice Temo also highlighted the human rights dimension of climate change, particularly its impact on land, culture, and relocation.
He also called on participants from national human rights institutions, governments, and civil society to move beyond discussion and form tangible partnerships.
Chief Justice Temo also urged attendees to develop concrete collaborations, such as documenting human rights impacts, advancing environmental legal strategies, and protecting environmental defenders.
His speech concluded with a call for unity and resilience, likening cooperation to weaving strong “magimagi” ropes to withstand turbulent times.
