Change policing culture from ‘warrior policing’ to ‘guardian policing’ - Daveta
Former Divisional Commander South Berenado Daveta stresses a point at the Community Policing Symposium

Former Divisional Commander South Berenado Daveta has urged police officers attending the Community Policing Symposium at the Nakasi Police Station to change their culture of policing and train their officers from a warrior type of policing to a guardian way of policing.

While recapping on the learnings from yesterday's meeting, Daveta says the warrior style can easily lead the police to using excessive force and police brutality.

He says more needs to be done such as respecting individual rights and the freedom of the people.

Daveta says the police need to be effective and efficient when using resources as they are using tax payers funds to run their operations.

He also told officers they are not supposed to be the people breaking the law as all of them underwent training when they entered this profession.

He also highlighted that from 2015 to 2020, about 100 police officers went through the court system for very serious crimes such as murder, manslaughter, rape and abduction.

Daveta also highlighted that there is a need for Community Policing training for officers and they will be conducting this in the near future where senior officers and experts will be conducting the training.

The workshop is attended by senior Police Officers, NGOs, CSOs and community youth reps.
