Captain Cameron Laing of the Australian Army has been moved by the smiles he has seen on the faces of people who have been severely affected by severe Tropical Cyclone Yasa in the Northern Division.
Captain Laing who is based at the RFMF’s Blackrock project in Nadi is currently in the Northern Division and is working with the National Disaster Management Office to help in the rehabilitation efforts after the cyclone. He says he has seen people sitting inside their damaged homes and still have a big bula smile and this shows that how resilient Fijian people are.
Captain Laing adds that by seeing this resilience he knows the Fijian people will bounce back.
He has also commended the quick recovery efforts that has been undertaken by the NDMO and relevant stakeholders.
Captain Laing and Warrant Officer Liam Wardle are working with the Ministry of Health, NDMO and RFMF to ensure all COVID-safe measures are in place to support the smooth insertion of HMAS Adelaide personnel to their working quarantine bubbles.
This will ensure Australian Defence Force personnel are able to support the RFMF in establishing immediate solutions to damaged schools on Galoa Island.
