Bus incident is a concern and investigation is underway – Kuruleca

The Education Ministry is deeply concerned about the incident involving students last Thursday afternoon, where some students were seen in a video behaving in an unruly manner while travelling in a bus.

The Permanent Secretary for Education, Selina Kuruleca, says according to the video circulating on social media, these students threw papers onto the road, obstructing traffic and creating a hazardous situation for motorists.

She says the incident escalated to the point where the actions of these alleged students nearly resulted in a serious road accident.

Kuruleca says such behaviour is absolutely unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

She adds the safety of students, as well as that of the general public, is of paramount importance.

The Education Permanent Secretary is reminding all students that engaging in such disruptive and dangerous behaviour is not only a violation of basic safety norms but also reflects poorly on the student's character, their family, their community, and the reputation of their school.

Kuruleca says this is a very serious matter, and an investigation is underway.

She also says they will be liaising closely with school heads, LTA, and parents to address this issue.

She is urging parents to instil the values of responsibility, respect, and safety in their children.

Kuruleca says teachers are reminded to ensure continued supervision of duty of care during these last few weeks of the 2023 academic year.

The Ministry is committed to taking appropriate action against those involved and will work diligently to ensure a swift resolution to this matter.

Meanwhile, Director of Traffic SSP Mitieli Divuana says the matter has been referred to LTA, who are taking necessary actions.

We have also sent questions to LTA. They are yet to respond.
