Roosters captain Boyd Cordner was brought to tears as he announced his rugby league retirement due to the effects of repeated head knocks.

The champion Roosters, NSW and Australian skipper fronted the media at the SCG today to call time on a 181-game NRL career which featured three premierships, two as co-captain.

As recently as a few weeks ago the 29-year-old and the Roosters had still been planning on a mid-season return, with coach Trent Robinson indicating that a round 17 comeback may be on the cards.

Cordner debuted in red, white and blue in round 13, 2011 and will be long regarded as one of the club's greats, having played a key role in their 2013, 2018 and 2019 premierships.
