We all have to make some sacrifices in our lives to achieve greater things and as for Auckland Blues’ prop Marcel Renata, he had to sacrifice the middle finger on his right hand to continue playing the sport he loves, and that is rugby.

Renata dislocated his finger at last year’s Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific season and attempts were made to fix it which ended up in the prop undergoing surgery.

The 29-year-old says it was an easy decision for him to make as the only solution that doctors came up with was for it to be fused straight.

He says he would have been like that for the rest of his life, which would have been an inconvenience, stuck with the middle finger straight so he decided to whack it off because it was more practical.

Now the prop is all set to return and will be expected to line up against the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua in their round 1 match of the 2024 Super Rugby Pacific competition this Saturday.

Renata says he has adapted well to having one finger short and most importantly he is happy that he is pain-free now.

The Blues will play the Fijian Drua at 3.35pm in Auckland this Saturday.
