Barrie Sweetman, an iconic figure in the development of sports in Fiji laid to rest

Barrie Sweetman who committed himself for over 40 years as a trustee for the Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee was laid to rest today.

Sweetman was also an Honorary Solicitor for Munro Leys from the 1970s to the early 2000s and his legal expertise was invaluable, as he chaired various Appeals Tribunals during the 1979 and 2003 South Pacific Games.

He was awarded the Fiji Olympic Order by FASANOC in 2008.

His legacy as a long-serving FASANOC Honorary Solicitor, inaugural Chairman of the Fiji Sports Council, and President of the Fiji Rugby Union will forever be remembered.

Sweetman served in leadership roles with the Fiji Rugby Union for over a decade, including as Chairman from 1973-1982 when Fiji achieved historic victories.

Beyond rugby, Sweetman was a pioneer in sports infrastructure development in Fiji as the first Chairman of the Fiji Sports Council from 1978, he guided the organization through its formative years.

As people mourn this immense loss, they also celebrate Barrie Sweetman's life and the profound impact of his passion, dedication, and visionary leadership.
