Another govt vehicle involved in accident

Another government vehicle has been involved in an accident - this time the driver hit an electric pole along Waimanu Road, close to Saint Joseph's Secondary School this afternoon.

This is the fifth government vehicle involved in an accident this week.

When questioned how much this is costing the government, Permanent Secretary for Finance Shiri Goundar says these are all leased vehicles under the leasing arrangement and covered under insurance.

Questions have been sent to the Police and the Ministry of Finance.

Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Professor Biman Prasad has issued a strict warning to all Government drivers to ensure full compliance with road safety regulations and the responsible use of Government vehicles.

He says Permanent Secretaries and transport officers have been directed to closely monitor driver behavior and vehicle usage and strict disciplinary measures—including surcharges, suspension, and termination—will be enforced against drivers for any reckless driving or misuse of Government vehicles.

Government is also introducing a toll-free complaints hotline, 1526, for the public to report any instances of reckless driving or overspeeding involving Government vehicles.

Professor Prasad says immediate improvements in driver behavior are expected to minimize road accidents, protect public safety, and uphold the integrity of Government operations.
